Dear Families,It's been a great week at HPS! The Olympic torch arrived on Thursday, followed by Opening Ceremonies and school-wide Olympics on Friday! A big thank you to our torch bearers and the Harrowsmith Olympic Committee. Thank you too to the School Advisory Council for providing and preparing the hot chocolate. All our item requests are posted on our website.There will be an after-school rehearsal this coming Monday, March 9, until 5:30 p.m. Only actors with speaking roles in Scenes 3 and 4 need to attend. These applications will be reviewed and processed for the first day of school, if they can be accommodated based on space available. Applications submitted after June 18 will not be reviewed until after school starts. If they can be accommodated, these special circumstance applications will be processed with a start date of October 5th at the earliest.Special Circumstance students currently receiving transportation do not need to reply. They will remain on the bus unless space is required for eligible students. Schools and families will be contacted before the end of this school year if they have been removed for the upcoming school year. Parents/caregivers are to use the SafeArrival system to report a full day absence, an extended student absence and also a late arrival to school.  To report an absence, use one the following methods:SCHOOL MESSENGER APPLICATION1.         Use the email address you provided to the school.2.         Use your mobile device to download and install the free SM Home app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.3.         Tap Sign Up to create your account. Please ensure you use the same email address your student􀀂s school has on 􀀃le. If you do not use that same email address, you will not be able to create an account, or may not be able to see the "Attendance" option. You may have already created an account when we introduced the Communicate broadcast system.4.         Select Attendance from the menu, then select Report an Absence and follow the prompts.SCHOOL MESSENGER SAFEARRIVE WEBSITE PORTAL1.         Use the e-mail address you provided to the school.2.         Go to the website <a href="https://go.schoolmessenger.ca/#/account/login" class="editor-link">SchoolMessenger website portal.</a>3.         Click Sign Up to create your account. Please ensure you use the same email address your child’s school has on file. If you do not use that same email address, you will not be able to create an account,or may not be able to see the "Attendance" option. Future absences can be reported at any time using any one of these methods. REPORT WEATHER OR TRANSPORTATION RELATED ABSENCEAll parents/guardians are asked to report their student’s absence regardless of the reason, including during bus cancellations. Often, bused students find alternative ways to school and we want to ensure we know the whereabouts of every student to ensure their safety and well-being. Knowing who is supposed to be at school will allow school office staff to best ensure all students are accounted for. The reporting tool has two options regarding transportation:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">Inclement weather (all transportation types and walkers) for any inclement weather days when your student will not be attending school.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Transportation (not weather-related) for any non-weather-related transportation reason when your student will not be attending school (e.g., when a bus is cancelled due to a driver shortage).</li></ul>We recognize this is a change in practice but one we are making to ensure student safety and well-being. Thank you for your support and understanding. If your student is marked absent and the absence hasn’t been reported in advance, the SafeArrival system will attempt to reach the student’s priority contact by telephone to confirm the absence. If you receive a call regarding your student’s absence, you can enter the reason for the absence during this call.   Please note that there is a cut off time in the system where you are unable to enter the reason for your child’s absence and must call the school office. <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">IMPORTANT:  Bus cancellation absences that are marked with the Inclement Weather reason in SafeArrival are not included in your child’s total absences for the school year. Limestone welcomes all students, promoting and encouraging families to attend their area school, but we understand that it is best interest of some students to attend an out-of-boundary school and that selecting the right educational setting for your new student is a significant decision.Selecting an out-of-boundary school for your new student is a decision influenced by many factors. The school may be closer to a workplace or near a childcare provider that might be more convenient for drop-off and pick-up routines. In accordance with board policy, by default, students will be enrolled in the school designated within their boundary area, based on their home address.We aim to accommodate family preferences, but please note that out-of-boundary placements are not guaranteed, and families will be responsible for organizing transportation to and from out-of-boundary schools.Students may be permitted to attend any school within the board when there is available student space, upon submission and approval of the proper application. The board will not be held responsible for the provision of any transportation for students outside of their regular school boundary area. About Our School

Welcome to Harrowsmith Public School, home of the HAWKS: Honesty, Attitude, Work, Knowledge, and Spirit! Harrowsmith Public School serves students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Our students come from the rural area located around the village of Harrowsmith. Our boundaries are from Florida Rd in the South, to Boyce Rd/Holleford Rd in the North, to Boundary/Loughborough Rd to the East, and to Boundary Rd to the West. Students are mostly bussed to the school. Some of our French Immersion Grade 7 and 8 students come from further North and West.

The school year will begin with a P.A. Day on September 1, 2026, with the first day of classes for students on September 2, 2026. A <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/school-year-calendar" class="editor-link">printable version of the calendar is available on Limestone’s website</a>.Budget SurveyTrustees are seeking feedback on the Limestone District School Board budget planning process for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. Families are encouraged to take a few minutes to provide feedback on areas or priority. Hosting an international student is a meaningful way to bring the world into your home while making a positive difference in a young person’s life. Limestone homestay families are carefully matched with students and supported by dedicated Limestone staff throughout the placement, so families are never on their own. Hosting offers opportunities for cultural exchange, the development of lasting relationships, and a monthly stipend to help offset costs. Limestone District School Board Welcomes 2026–2027 Student Trustees

The Limestone District School Board (LDSB) is pleased to announce the appointment of its 2026–2027 Student Trustees, who will be formally welcomed at the April meeting of the Board.Student trustees play an important role in bringing student perspectives to board-level discussions, helping ensure that student voice is reflected in decision-making across the district. For the upcoming term, LDSB looks forward to working with three engaged and passionate student leaders who represent rural, urban, and Indigenous student communities:<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Audrey Bateman – Rural Student Trustee</h2>A message from Student Trustee Bateman: I'm so excited to be your rural student trustee this year. This role is such a great place to create lasting change for the current and future classes. I'm really looking forward to connecting with the trustees and students from across the board to try and make school a more fun, inclusive, and memorable experience where we can.  Everyone's voice matters!<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Victoria McCourt – Indigenous Student Trustee</h2>A message from Student Trustee McCourt: I applied for the Indigenous student trustee position because I feel that having a voice to represent Indigenous students, their issues and concerns is important. I would like to help celebrate and honour the Indigenous students in the Limestone District School Board. I look forward to helping create more opportunities for Indigenous students and I want our youth to feel proud of who they are and their Indigenous identity. <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Mathew Katz – Urban Student Trustee</h2>A message from Student Trustee Katz: I applied to become a student trustee to advocate for issues that both I and students from across LDSB are passionate about. I specifically hope to be able to work on issues related to environmental sustainability and anti-racism. Message from the Director - February 20, 2026

Dear Families,I hope everyone had a good, short week following the Family Day Weekend. We have had a small taste of warmer weather recently, though we know there may still be more winter days to come. As we head toward the end of February, I would like to share a few updates with Limestone families:2026-2027 School Year CalendarThank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the 2026-2027 School Year Calendar Survey. Approximately 3,700 responses were submitted from families, staff, and community members. We appreciate your time and providing the feedback.As shared previously, the school year calendar for 2026-2027 presents unique challenges, with Labour Day falling unusually late on September 7, and Easter occurring just four days after March Break. Across all three school boards (Limestone DSB, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic DSB, and Hastings and Prince Edward County DSB) Option 1 was the preferred choice, and Option 2 ranked second and third, with only marginal differences in support.Following further review of the potential calendars, and considering potential financial implications, it was determined that implementing Option 1 would create additional costs for all three boards. Given that Option 2 very closely aligns with Option 1, differing by only one day and without the associated financial implications, all three boards supported Option 2, with the school year starting September 1 (P.A. Day) and the first day of classes for students on September 2.At Wednesday night’s Board Meeting, the Limestone Board of Trustees approved <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/documents/375540e1-d8af-4e1c-a856-7035ab3f1e4b/2026-2027-School-Year-Calendar-Final.pdf" class="editor-link">Option 2 for the 2026-2027 school year calendar</a>, and this calendar will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval.You Are Invited: Community Event: An Evening with Monique Gray Smith, Author of Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults – March 12, 2026Students, families, staff, and community members are invited to a free in-person evening with author Monique Gray Smith.
